Ch. 3: It’s True! Or is it…? Part 1
My Inlaws really are satanists!! Or…are they?
Needless to say, it was difficult to make sense of what Scott was telling me. I’m hearing all kinds of stories about clandestine meetings, dark basements, his being taken to these meetings where terrible things were done to him (and others) as part of their secret satan worship…by my child’s grandparents!!! Who I’ve left her alone with countless times! Who my husband refused to allow her near anymore. And I’m hearing all of this from a man recovering from a manic episode, with a diagnosis of Bipolar I, an illness that can also include episodes of psychosis.
Okay.
I wasn’t sure what to think, but I let him tell his story. By this time, two months had passed since That Night he first told me these things during an episode of unmedicated mania. He had been back on medication ever since. The mania was long gone. He had gone back to work, we were humming along our lives, and although I initially felt like what he said just might be true, I ended up dismissing it as part of the episode. He didn’t mention it anymore. Word had gotten back to his parents that he said these things about them. They didn’t seem angry, but of course they were sad that he had deteriorated so much as to become targets of his delusions. They did their best to assure me that they were normal, while telling me that maybe he was reaping for sins he had committed years before we were married. Or maybe it was the shots. His mother mentioned that several kids in their old neighborhood were having issues as adults, so it had to be those horrible shots they got in the 70s.
Okay.
